That's our very small collection right there stacked on the shelf. I've been buying vintage records here and there at estate sales and thrift stores (and a couple on ebay, when I went through my It's a Small World obsession) getting ready for this record player we've been talking about getting for months. We knew we wanted it for Christmas, there's something about listening to records around the holidays - just seems like the perfect time to do it!, and it arrived today! We got this one:
I loved the retro styling.. I think I'll add some vintage patterned wallpaper on the inside of the lid so it looks pretty when it's open.
Most of the records I've found, the jackets aren't in the best condition, but you get what you pay for. And I'm ok that Bing Crosby has his teeth colored in with pencil and there are names written on some of them, no doubt by the owners. I love knowing that they've been well loved. : ) I'm curious, should I buy some of those clear sleeves to put them in even though they aren't in the best condition anyways? Maybe I'll do that. Also, we haven't tested out the actual records yet, so hopefully they'll work okay. I'm sure there will be scratches. ; )
I decided on a whim today to photograph our humble collection. Most of them are children's records, which was intended. I really, really wanted the boys to have a more tangible experience with music, something better than MP3s blaring from the computer. Some of these are also stories! Can't wait to play those for them. Lots of Disney. Some old Country. Of course some holiday music. And yes, some just because the album artwork was just too darn awesome.
The illustrations on some of these really make me wish I got my degree concentration in Illustration instead of Graphic Design. Design has been a REALLY good skill to have under my belt... but illustration would've been so much more fun. : )
Now I need to find a cool record stand to display them in.
