I have to say, ever since we (finally) painted this fireplace white, it's been such a great backdrop for pretty vignettes, especially anything holiday related. It took on a new life at Christmas time last year and then we celebrated sweethearts in February.
I first saw these hair salon ads from the 60's (?) at my favorite store in Atlanta, Highland Row Antiques, a month or so ago. The instant I saw them, I knew I would love to hang them in the house, but thought they might be a bit too odd for Ethan (although I think he's probably used to it by now. haha) So I passed them up. (sad face)
When I was thinking about Halloween decor the past week or so, I thought about adding masks to portrait photos and I immediately remembered these awesome ladies. So I called up the shop and described them to the owner crossing my fingers that they were still there. And sure enough, they were. : ) So I bolted over there yesterday to scoop them up before I picked up Cooper at school. I LOVE THEM to pieces and who knows, maybe I'll take off those masks after Halloween and display them somewhere in the house in all of their kitschy glory. I think these ladies are quite friendly looking.
The other masks I found on Amazon, Etsy and Ebay (all are vintage except for the molded plastic cat). I knew I wanted to do a display with masks, and I love this motley crew of characters together.
The owl is from Martha Stewart Crafts at Michaels from 2 years ago (i haven't put it up til this year!).
I'm going to be hanging some more kid-friendly decorations outside and around this house (ya know, like giant spiders and tacky jackolanterns. ;) October is my absolute favorite month of the year I've decided. I don't know why I've just now realized that this year, but I have. Looking forward to one of our favorite Halloween parades this weekend and seeing our little men dressed up soon.
Have a lovely weekend!

I think the ladies should stay there all year, and you just adjust their decorations for the season. Turkey legs for thanksgiving, stocking hats and scarves for winter, red hearts on their cheeks for valentine's day and so on and so forth.

I just wandered over here from Freckled Nest and now I don't want to go back! Jesus balls your house is cuuuuuute. Seriously, can I move in? The masked photos on the mantle - genius. And then, I started scrolling through the rest of your blog and what do I see? The orange couch with the 'Easy Does It' vignette above it. I was drooling over that somewhere else on the web last week. It's you! As if that's not enough, scroll a little further and I come across your self-portrait - damn, you're a snazzy dresser too! I know I've seen your fabulous fashion in photos somewhere before...
That's it Thompson Family, you're going on my daily read list!

i saw some 1950's oil paintings portraits of little girls in the thrift shop the other day and loved them. but thought they would be weird to hang someone else's kids up! i might have to see if they are still there!

Has your son's asked if they can wear the masks or better yet, climb up and take them? My daughter would be all over them! and tantrums when I said no!

Brilliant! I don't normally like Halloween decorations, but these I would take in a second! Unfortunately, my husband isn't quite as accepting as yours-he lets me take liberties, but there's no way he'd accept those portraits!

love this idea - i did something kind of similar. i played around with an old family photograph - made it b/w, added masks to our faces and bats to the background. took a copy of the image to kinkos and had them blow it up to a 20 x 30" print. painted over top of the print and it is now hanging above our fireplace.
